WNBA star Brittany Griner sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison

A Russian court on Thursday sentenced WNBA star Brittany Griner to nine years in prison, an expected

conclusion of her trial that should speed up talks for a prisoner swap. Sources close to the player said Griner

who was arrested on February 17 for bringing cannabis into the country, was set to face severe punishment.

But He and his supporters were aware that until his trial was over, Russia would not move through with a trade

that may allow him to return home. A guilty verdict was considered a foregone conclusion, and Griner

pleaded guilty on 7 July. However, the case continued under Russian law. During sentencing, Judge Anna Sotnikova

said she found that Griner knowingly broke the law and also fined him 1 million rubles (about $16,700).

Sotnikova said the length of time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count towards sentencing.

Griner behaves to the sentence with little emotion, hearing the verdict with a blank look on his face.
