Two killed in lightning near White House

An elderly Wisconsin couple was killed by lightning near the White House in Washington DC.

James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, died from their injuries.

Two others were killed and injured and taken to a city hospital.

Fire officials said the victims were in Lafayette Park during a violent storm on Thursday when they were killed.

The park's proximity to the US presidency meant that members of the US Secret Service were among the first to aid the victims.

The White House has expressed condolences to the families of the couple who died. "We are praying for

those who are still fighting for their lives," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Four people were struck by lightning near a tree from a fence around the White House complex.
